Ben Kirby

overview

Ben studied philosophy at University, and had a short-lived foray into advertising before joining KPMG to advise private equity houses. Sensing it would be more fun on the other side of the table, he made the jump to investor and never looked back. He’s now been an investor for more than 12 years. At True, his role is to find great brands to partner with; he’s also involved in portfolio management and has sat on the boards of Hush and Frugi.

Why did you choose True?

As private equity becomes more competitive, firms need to offer more than just cash. As a sector specialist with a fantastic network, True can be a real value-add partner for founders and management teams, which I found really exciting and appealing.

How would you describe your job to a five-year-old?

We provide money and advice to people to help them grow their companies.

What do you love most — and least — about your job?

I love the variety and working with amazing entrepreneurs. I hate having to sometimes say no to entrepreneurs who have put their heart and soul into their businesses.

Name an idea or company that reimagined a business or industry — one you wish you’d thought of.

I wish I'd founded Airbnb as it’s a great example of how you can disrupt an industry and drive change in consumer behaviour.

Which person or people helped shape and inspire who you are today?

It’s a mix of the founders and CEOs I’ve been lucky enough to back throughout my career as an investor.
