Eliot was born and raised in London, but his family roots are in Gibraltar, Trinidad and Barbados. He attended UCL, where he co-founded a MedTech startup — Ophidia Medical Technologies — using technologies such as IOT, blockchain and e-ink displays to develop prototype digital vaccine labels that can be updated over the air, for GSK. He joined True upon graduation in 2021.
The people I interviewed with were very friendly and kind. They emphasised first the importance of skills such as empathy and emotional intelligence and stated the importance of all types of diversity in the workforce. This is something that hadn’t been mentioned to me prior to this in interviews, so it was really nice to see what True sees as important aligned with what I see as important. Secondly, the firm is rapidly growing. I think this is testament to the really unique, future-fit business model and plethora of experience in all employees, in all departments, from analysts to founders — experience which I believed I could learn a lot from. Finally, my role is diverse due to the large number of small and large clients True has, the unique business model, and because innovation and trends within the consumer and retail industry are constantly changing. This means that two days are rarely the same, so that was really exciting for me.
I look for trends in technologies and trends in what people are using. I then find very innovative small businesses in these areas that we can invest in and show them to large companies so they can use that innovation.
I’ve only just started, so no negatives yet. But what I love the most is the people. Everyone is very affable, intelligent and highly skilled in what they do — lots to learn from.
I wish I had created a cryptocurrency, specifically having created blockchains that have smart contracts, such as Ethereum and Cardano. I think the blockchain is one of the most significant innovations since the internet, and smart contracts, are going to enable streamlining of complex processes that normally involve multiple intermediaries, allowing fast transactions without engagement of third parties. This has potential applications to many areas such as law, finance, properties, big pharmas, voting and many more.
I’d say my mum. Being a single parent who taught English at secondary school level, she definitely had a lot on her plate but still always found time to help me and my brother with school work, take us to football and rugby training and much more.
Eliot’s expertise at True:
Eliot has only been with True a few months but in that time has worked across some key Partner projects — including deep-dives into the world of the Metaverse and Q-Commerce.
Not a day seems to go by that a New ‘Quick’ grocery operator doesn't raise funds - launching in a new country or forming a new partnership. In just the past few weeks Berlin-based Gorillas has raised $1bn, and launched a partnership with Tesco.
This October, our team was finally able to meet in person for a few fun-filled days of getting to know each other — and our new brand — a little better.
“Eva is someone who is always offering a helping hand, in both personal and work-related matters, no matter how much work she has on her plate. Her positive attitude is always lifting team morale.”
“Mike is one of those rare people who can inspire, educate and drive a team whilst being a kind, humorous and empathetic leader. He creates an environment that encourages communication and collaboration in a way that makes you want to work hard and show up every day!”
