Walgreens was founded in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. Our Retail Pharmacy USA division’s principal retail pharmacy brands are Walgreens (nationwide) and Duane Reade (New York City-only). Together, they form one of the largest drugstore chains in the United States. We operate 9,021 drugstores in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Approximately 78% of the U.S. population lives within 5 miles of a Walgreens pharmacy. Walgreens sells prescription and non-prescription drugs, as well as general retail merchandise, including household items, convenience and fresh foods, beauty and personal care items, photo cards and gifts, and candy. Walgreens filled approximately 818 million prescriptions in fiscal year 2020 (including immunisations) with the pharmacy business accounting for 75% of sales.

The Walgreens Start-up Challenge aims to uncover innovative solutions and build truly exciting partnerships that can have meaningful impact on the business.
